I have found an error in the set up of the subscriptions through FeedBurner.

Could readers that Susbcribed more than a few days ago please go back to the blog and Subscribe again. The previous subscription setup only gave Comment changes and not articles. The new subscription updates articles only, so not so much email and what you do get will make more sense.

Regards
Neil Miley

This post has been edited to include the observation of David Kirk on the buckle highlight. David noted the thickness of the painted highlight. Neil went back for another look and photographed the painting in raking light.

To see how heavy this paint is look at the two new images at the bottom of the post. It stands in marked contrast to the otherwise quite flat surface of the painting.

Just a bit more information on the wood panels. They come from China and are Chinese Ply Wood. The wholesaler could not give me a lot of information on the panels so I had a look at available information on China's timber industry to see how likely it was that the panels would be from plantations.

China has been a net importer of wood for many years and in the late 1980s started a plantation program to reduce reliance on imported timber. Most of the timber types in their plantations are pine. The plantations are expected to produce around 150 million cubic meters of timber per annum by 2015.

Given the quality of the timber and the consistency of the product I'm confident that this is plantation timber. The origin of the timber cant be identified for certain but imported timber is quite expensive for China so it is likely to come from Chinese plantations.

Comparing these panels to the quality of material used in cheap canvas stretchers is like comparing a fine wine to a poor quality beer that has gone flat. The people working in making these panels are obviously taking care in their end product.

Paris44 you are quite right these are wonderful surfaces to paint on. we are working on a short video to show how to prepare them for use.

Since writing this review I have found that low cost versions are in print and have been since 2007. Order through Amazon uk or in Australia Fishpond.com.au (lower prices than Amazon.com).
